Different Styles of Furniture

There are several different types of furniture available today to suit diverse styles and tastes. The environment that you live in portrays the person you are. Your furnishings and the décor that you style your home in represent your choices as well as your personality traits. Thus, not only should the living space designed and created by you be comfortable, but also adaptable to changing fashions and trends.

Let's take a closer look at some of the most common styles of furniture being designed today.

FRENCH DOORS

Contemporary

Also known as modern, it is created to be comfortable, solid and more than anything natural. With not too many trappings, the colors mostly resonate around black, white, beige, brown and taupe. Polished surfaces, sleek and geometric designs are often the characteristics that represent contemporary furniture. Though the colors are simple, they are used in a bold and vibrant way for a true contemporary look. For instance, stark white cushions on black upholstered sofas makes for a bold statement. A lot of metal, fibreglass, aluminium is also used. The most essential feature of this kind of look is that every piece of furniture is striking and sophisticated. Most people today enjoy designing their house and office both, in the contemporary style.

Traditional

The quintessence of traditional furniture is dark woods with ornate carvings and a majestic appearance. The final look is busy with floor layouts matching the details of the furniture. With classic features of form and ornament, the lines of traditional furniture tend towards being elegant. Queen Anne, Chippendale, Hepplewhite etc are some of the common types of traditional furniture.

Urban

The more modern trend, urban leans towards the minimalist. The woods have either a black finish with brushed aluminum highlights and glass or light, blond woods with brushed aluminum and glass. The pieces are small scaled and designed to fit small apartments.

Country and Cottage

Lighter shades of woods, muted colors, simple lines and vintage fabrics make for country and cottage styles. The most important aspect of this type is comfort and color. Furniture is sometimes painted or decorated and furniture lines are simple and graceful. Textures include baskets, bead-board walls, natural fibers in floor and window coverings, and weathered finish on wood furniture.

Transitional

Simpler lines than those found in more traditional styles, but not as simple as contemporary. Transitional furniture is about melding comfort and simplicity of the contemporary with the graceful styling of traditional furniture.

Eclectic

An eclectic style is a reflection of an individual's love of different design aspects from different time periods or styles. The overall look of an eclectically styled room though unique, is amalgamated harmoniously through the creative use of color and finish, shape and texture.

Rustic

This style of furniture represents lots of exposed woods, walls, columns and beams, simple lines and a practical feel. Often wood panelling and stone are also used. Rustic furniture looks tough and durable while the accessories are primitive and somewhat minimized.

Amish

If you are looking for good handcrafted furniture, Amish furniture is a great style to consider. Most Amish furniture is composed of oak, cedar or pine. You can find everything from living room to bedroom to office furniture in the Amish furniture style.

Art Deco

Art Deco is both, geometric and streamlined with bright colors, strong vertical lines and rounded corners. While often Art Deco pieces are made of exotic woods, the use of use of bakelite and Formica also abound. Juxtaposition of opposing elements is common to this style - for instance, rare and expensive jade and inexpensive bakelite.

Colonial

It simplifies the look of European furniture and leans greatly towards Queen Anne and Chippendale styles. Chairs characterize spindled legs and backs rather than ornate designs.

How to Get Your Foot in the Door, and 9 More Idioms to Improve Your Spoken English

Get your foot in the door, but don't shoot yourself in the foot afterwards! Idioms, or expressions that don't mean literally what the words say, are part of everyday speech in America. To avoid misunderstandings, it is important to improve your spoken English by mastering as many idioms as possible. Today's expressions all use the word foot, and each idiom is highlighted in the story. Try and figure out as many of the expressions as you can as you read the story about a man named Steve getting advice from a friend about an upcoming interview.

Steve has wanted to work for the Global Electronics company for years. He would love to design and build widgets, but has no experience in the field. Until now, he couldn't figure out how to get his foot in the door, but now he has the perfect contact.

FRENCH DOORS

John has been working there for the past 3 years in HR, and offered to schedule an interview for Steve for a new position. John sympathizes with Steve, as he remembers well how he felt before he was hired. Now the shoe is on the other foot and he has a chance to help out a friend.

"You need to put your best foot forward," John told Steve. "There are a lot of people interviewing for this position, and the competition is tough. If you get off on the wrong foot with the boss, you probably won't have a chance at the job.

The last guy we interviewed shot himself in the foot, bragging about how he had cheated his previous employer and no one found out. I think you'll do fine, though. You are very motivated and articulate; I don't think you'll put your foot in your mouth.

If you do well in the first interview, the senior vice president will want to take you out for lunch to get to know you better. He looks like he has one foot in the grave, but he still holds most of the decision-making power. Just relax and enjoy yourself; he won't set foot in the company cafeteria, so he will take you to a nice restaurant and the company will foot the bill. I know you're nervous because you haven't done this type of work before, but once you get your feet wet, you'll do great."

How did you do? Check yourself below with the list of definitions for each idiom.

Get his foot in the door - get started toward a goal; take the initial step to do something bigger origin: Traveling salesmen used to go door- to door to sell their goods. They would put their foot in the door so the owner couldn't shut it and would have to listen to their sales pitch and, hopefully, buy something. Shoe is on the other foot - the situation is reversed, so the person understands a different perspective origin: Years ago, shoes used to be made exactly the same for each foot, but later they were made specifically for each foot. Then, it was uncomfortable to wear one shoe on the other foot. So, if you wore your shoe on the other foot, you would notice how different it felt. Put your best foot forward - make a great first impression; begin with enthusiasm Get off on the wrong foot - start poorly, make a bad impression, start a relationship with a mistake Shoot himself in the foot - accidentally do something to harm your career or advancement origin: literally, accidentally shooting oneself in the foot, causing temporary or permanent damage Put your foot in your mouth- say something foolish or embarrassing origin: thought to come from foot and mouth disease, which causes embarrassing red spots and sores all over the mouth One foot in the grave - near death Set foot in - enter Foot the bill - pay whatever money is due origin: Footing used to mean adding up figures in a list and placing a total at the foot of the column. Years ago, it was common practice to ask a customer to foot the bill (check the arithmetic) as a polite way of saying 'pay the bill'. Over time, it became an accepted expression simply meaning to pay the bill. Get your feet wet- try something new; get some experience working origin: Someone who is afraid to swim will start by getting their feet wet, taking a step towards the new experience of getting all the way in the water and swimming

Did you get most of them right? Then you got off on the right foot to improve your spoken English and will soon have the world at your feet ( be very successful)!

Dual Pane Window Glass Repair

For the past few weeks, I have been explaining how to repair a broken window pane in your home. But, what if you have dual pane windows? Is the process the same? Well, pretty much, except for a couple of variations. So, let's review the single pane repair process, and I will point out the differences regarding dual pane windows.

When we start talking about dual pane windows, one of the first things that comes to mind is vinyl window frames instead of aluminum. When dealing with dual pane windows, you can have either aluminum or vinyl frames, depending on the year the house was built. Dual pane glass got popular in the 1980's, but vinyl frames didn't really catch on until the 1990's. So, if your house is less than 10 years old, chances are you have vinyl framed windows. In either case, I will discuss the differences. Let's say you have a sliding aluminum frame window with dual pane glass. The procedure for removing the frame from the opening and the glass from the sash is the same as with the single pane windows.

FRENCH DOORS

The differences are, first, the glass goes into the frame about twice as far as the single pane window. The single pane window glass went 1/4" into the surrounding rubber. The dual pane usually goes 1/2" into the rubber. So, if both pieces of glass have been broken, you are going to have to order a new IGU (Insulated Glass Unit) from the local glass shop. They are going to want to know the width, height, overall thickness, and possibly the individual glass thickness. The best way to get the dimensions is to measure the width and height from rubber to rubber, write those numbers down. Then, remove the panel from the opening and place it on a table like we did with the single pane window. Remove the screws from opposite corners and pull of the frame. You will be able to see how far the glass goes into the surrounding rubber. If it's 1/2", then you want to add 1" to the width and height that you measured previously (1/2" times two sides= 1"). Then, measure the overall thickness of the unit by removing the rubber from the glass edge.

Typically, this dimension is 1/2", but not always. There is a metal spacer that divides the two panes of glass. Make a note of the color so you can request the same color in the new IGU. It's either going to be silver or bronze. If you want to get the same size spacer you need to give the glass shop the thickness of each piece of glass in the IGU. If the old unit has 1/8" glass on both sides, and the overall thickness of the unit is 1/2", then they will use a 1/4" spacer. If the glass is 3/32" on both sides, they will use a 5/16" spacer. If you don't care about matching the spacer thickness, you can request the thicker 1/8" glass, and they will automatically use a 1/4" spacer.

When you get the new IGU home, the installation is the same as the single pane window. Now, what if only one side of the IGU has been broken? Many times the outer pane will break, but the inside pane is fine. You can order a whole new IGU Like we just did, or, if you're the adventurous type, you can order only the single pane of glass that was broken and replace it. I'm going to explain how to do it, then i'm going to tell you the things that can go wrong. After you have the window pane on the table with the surrounding frame removed, you will see a black rubber type substance around the edge where the spacer is applied. This is a butyl sealant, and you have to separate the broken glass from this butyl. The best way to do it is to take a utility knife with a new blade and break through the butyl where it meets the broken glass. Then, take a new hacksaw blade, and push it into the area where you sparated the butyl from the glass. You don't want the hacksaw blade to be attached to a hacksaw. Using your hand, saw back and forth as you work your way around the edge of the glass. This should allow you to remove the glass.

Once that's done, lay rags on top of the good piece of glass to catch any debris, and scrape the surface of the spacer that will be contacting the new glass. Use a putty knife. Then, remove the rags and debris. When you are ready to put the new glass on, clean the inside of the good piece of glass that you didn't remove. Remember, once you install the new glass, any debris or finger marks on the inside will be permanently sealed. So, clean it real good and check it from all angles. Do the same to the side of the new glass that will be going to the inside of the IGU. Then, run a thin bead of clear silicone around the entire perimeter of the spacer. Set your new glass on the spacer and use finger pressure to adhere the glass to the silicone all the way around. Then, come in from the side, and run silicone around the side where the glass and spacer meet. Cover the window opening with something for 24 hours. You do not want to touch the IGU for 24 hours. The silicone needs to cure. After 24 hours, you can assemble the unit and install it back into the opening.

There are a couple of things that can go wrong. The first one is leaving marks on the inside portion of the glass. Once you seal the glass, you cannot clean what's between the panes. The other thing involves condensation between the panes. If you have even the slightest break in the silicone seal around the glass, chances are you will beging to see moisture form as soon as the nights get cold and the days get warm. You are going to have to decide if you are confident enough in your ability to do the job right, or if it's better to pay the extra money to have it done for you. Just because you pay someone to do it, doesn't mean you still won't encounter the same problems. The difference is, they have to guarantee their IGU for a minimum of 1 year. I have received many units over the years that had marks in between the glass. The beauty of it is the manufacturer can't dispute it, because there's no way anyone else could have done it except them.

OK, what if the window frames are vinyl instead of aluminum? Well, the main difference is the glass in a vinyl window no longer has the rubber gasket around the edge. You dont remove the opposite corner screws and separate the frame from the glass. What they do is put either silicone or a two sided tape on the lip of the frame where the glass rests. That's what holds the glass in the frame, then they apply a snap in stop on all four sides of the glass. So, you have to remove the stops first, then turn over the panel and break the seal holding the glass to the frame using a utility knife. Wear gloves during this procedure. If only one side of the IGU is broken, don't even think about repairing just the one side. You will never get that IGU out of the frame without breaking the other piece of glass in the process. But, on the positive side, you can remove the stops without taking the panel out if it's a slider. You can then measure the dimensions of the glass, and order the new IGU. That way you eliminate any need to temporarily cover up your window. The same is true for the stationary portion of a slider, or a picture window. Before you install the new IGU, be sure and clean the lip that had the tape or silicone, and apply either silicone or tape. Either will work.

You will discover that replacing an IGU in an aluminum frame window is a whole lot easier than a vinyl window. But, in either case, you can do it yourself and save a few bucks.

Ouch! My Puppy Dog is Biting My Hands and Clothes

This article explains in plain English the fastest way to stop your puppy dog biting at your clothing, hands or other body parts. If you have "tried everything" or simply have no idea what to do, the answers are all here and made easy. Methods are humane and pet-friendly, utilizing positive reinforcement and 'time-outs' instead of spanking or scolding.

All puppies will bite and chew your body parts or clothing. It is just what puppies do. Their sharp, needle-like teeth can cause quite a lot of pain, and clothing can easily be damaged. It makes sense that we want to teach puppy that this is unacceptable as quickly as possible. What's more, if puppies are allowed to continue this behavior, by the time they are adolescents or adults they could cause some serious damage!

FRENCH DOORS

That's not to say that having a puppy's mouth on you is necessarily a 'bad' thing. Puppies need to learn what we call 'bite inhibition', which is a soft, inhibited bite. Why? All dogs will bite under certain circumstances, particularly if taken by surprise. The dog that learns bite inhibition can bite without causing any real damage.

First, some theory. Don't worry, it's not long and boring!

If you have read my earlier article "Secrets of Dog Training Professionals - Operant Conditioning" then you will be familiar with the term 'Negative Punishment'. Sounds awful, doesn't it? But don't worry, Negative Punishment simply means that behavior is decreased because we took something away as a consequence of that behavior.

A 'time out' is a Negative Punisher when the target behavior is decreased. Time outs are one of the most humane and pet-friendly punishments we can use, when used with thought and care.

Puppies bite at our hands and clothing because that is the way that puppies like to play. It is fun, and they enjoy our attention. They particularly like it if we try to fight them off of us. Have you ever seen two or more puppies playing? They like to fight each other with their mouths and paws.

Normally, other puppies teach our puppy not to bite too hard by squealing in pain. When we take our puppy from the litter, these other puppies aren't around to teach proper bite inhibition any more. Some people advise trying to emulate a 'puppy squeal' to discourage biting too hard.

I don't know why, but people just don't seem to be very convincing with their squeals, so I don't recommend it as a training technique. What's more, some puppies seem to enjoy it when their human squeals and will get more excited, resulting in more biting. This is obviously not what we want puppy to do! If you can squeal and your puppy immediately stops biting, then this is an acceptable technique. Monitor the behavior long-term, though, to make sure biting too hard is decreasing.

A different, yet highly effective aproach is to say 'ouch' in a neutral tone of voice (not loud, not high-pitched and not angry) then walk out of the room, shutting the door behind you for 30 seconds. This marks the exact behavior you are trying to punish, then gives a time-out as a consequence.

It may take puppy a little while to figure out the link between his biting and the time-out, but the marker will make it clearer. It is important to say 'ouch' in a neutral tone of voice, and say it exactly at the moment that puppy bites too hard.

Notice that I said "exactly at the moment that puppy bites too hard"? We don't want to discourage young puppies from biting altogether, this would be bite prohibition. We want to teach puppies to inhibit their bite.

Time-outs should not be excessive. A long time-out can be stressful and lead to other unwanted behaviors. 30 seconds is more than enough and seems to be quite effective. Don't look back at puppy or try to push puppy away when you say 'ouch'. Simply get up and leave, closing the door behind you.

If you have family or friends in the room then it might be easier to lead puppy out of the room and shut him out for his time-out. However, this doesn't seem to be as effective to me.

Remember, it is only punishment if the behavior decreases. Continuing with a punishment which is unclear or ineffective is a waste of time and borders on abuse (although, it would be hard to do damage with a 30 second time-out). Consider your timing, consistency and whether or not there is anyone else in puppy's life who is not following through with this protocol consistently. It is important that you explain the rules to anyone who plays with puppy.

If all else fails, seek professional advice. Most vet clinics are now offering puppy kinder classes using humane and pet-friendly techniques.

How to Seal Brick and Other Masonry Buildings

Water entering a masonry substrate can cause your home to have interior leaks or exterior staining, spalling and efflorescence. Usually the masonry substrate can absorb the liquid water and release it again when it stops raining. However, the masonry could still have staining and efflorescence.

In modern home construction, masonry is used as a veneer. That is, homes and buildings that have brick, stone, stucco or some other masonry exterior are traditional wood or steel buildings on the inside. The veneer is just a cosmetic look. Therefore, improper building practices can cause leaks into the house or around windows and doors. At the more extreme circumstance, improper building practices can cause the structure of the building to become damaged due to water.

DOORS LOWES

Efflorescence

Efflorescence is the whitish staining that is seen on the surface of brick and masonry. This is actually the accumulation of salts from the brick itself. What happens is that the water inside of the brick dissolves the natural salts that are present from the manufacturing of the brick. Then the water evaporates to the surrounding air, leaving the salts on the surface to be seen.

Spalling

Spalling is when the brick or masonry substrate flakes. This can be caused by water freezing inside of the brick and expanding. The expansion causes the brick to break and flake.

Now, to waterproof brick or masonry it must be sealed against water penetration. But be careful. A surface sealer such as acrylics, silicones or epoxies can actually trap water vapor from the inside of the building from getting out. As mentioned before, this can cause spalling.

Brick pavers and concrete sidewalks or driveways come under attack from deicing salts. These salts do extensive damage to the substrate. By sealing the surface, the salts will not be able to do damage to the substrates.

The best way to waterproof and seal a brick or other masonry substrate is with a penetrating siloxane based sealer. The siloxane actually penetrates into the masonry substrate and chemically bonds to it. This fills the pores and prevents liquid water from penetrating. However, siloxanes are 100% breathable. So water vapor from the interior can still escape from the brick. This will reduce spalling.

Siloxanes have the added benefit of not coloring or darkening the substrate. They are clear and do not leave a glossy sheen. Since siloxanes penetrate the masonry and are not on the surface, the original texture of the surface is maintained. And the penetration into the masonry substrate actually protects them from the elements. They will be long lived and give years of maintenance free performance.

Small Bathroom Shower Design Options

How to fit a small bathroom shower

What do you do if you want to install a shower but you only have a very small bathroom?

DOORS LOWES

While I love my bathtub for the rare occasions that I get to use it for a long relaxing soak, I don't know what I would do without my shower. Showers are quick, refreshing and a lot more economical than taking baths. When I had the chance to redesign my small bathroom I jumped at the opportunity to improve the shower that was installed above the bathtub at the time.

The first thing to remember is that there usually is a way to do these things and you mustn't give up before you've really thought about the problem. Don't be put off by the fact that you don't seem to have much room to play with in your bathroom design.

So what are the options?

Throw the bathtub away

Taking out the bathtub will give you more than enough room to fit a sizeable shower enclosure. Unfortunately you won't have a bath anymore. While this might fit in well with your current lifestyle you might want to think about what you might have need of a few years down the line and when you come to sell your property.

When you sell a property you must have a bathroom with a bathtub even if it has a great shower instead. People expect to find a bath in the bathroom and the lack of one can seriously depress the value of your property.

Put your shower in your bathtub

If you have no other option you can install a showerhead above your bathtub together with a shower curtain or splashguard. This should be the easiest solution, as it will take up no additional floor space. Personally I'm not keen on this option.

Turn your bathroom into a wet room

This is an ambitious design that will involve turning the floor of your entire bathroom into a giant shower base and drain. It can be a very expensive option to convert a conventional bathroom into wet room but it has the advantage of allowing you to put your small bathroom shower anywhere you like. Even over the toilet if you want to although I wouldn't advise it.

Install a curved quadrant shower cubicle

The option that I like best for any bathroom is to install a separate shower enclosure either free standing in the room or in a corner of the bathroom. This is a great solution if you can find the space to accommodate the shower enclosure.

The problem with this idea is finding the space in a small bathroom to fit the shower enclosure. Enclosures come in various sizes so you will need first of all to decide on the smallest size that you think you can live with. Even a very small shower enclosure is better than none at all.

To make the space available you should consider the whole small bathroom design. Find a smaller toilet and washbasin and even a smaller bathtub if you have to. Use squared paper and cut out shapes to try many different ways of arranging everything.

Finally look at curved quadrant shower enclosures as a space saving alternative to square or rectangular ones. Finding one of these was the turning point in my small bathroom shower design. Everything fell into place nicely after that.

A Backyard Fire Pit - Do It Yourself Today

If you've been looking at buying a fire pit, then you're probably already aware that you can buy ready-made models that only require some simple assembly. But wouldn't it be nice to create your own fire pit? One that's uniquely yours? You don't need a complicated set of blueprints to build your own fire pit - you just need to have an idea in your head of what you're trying to create. It doesn't take a lot to build a fire pit for barbequing or an outdoor campfire. A DIY fire pit can cost next to nothing to construct, apart from some time and hard work, and is even cheaper if you already have some materials such as bricks or rocks on hand.

The first step is to choose a safe location for your fire pit. Make sure it's nowhere near any structures that could catch fire, and locate it away from any backyard traffic zones. It's also worth talking to your local fire department in case you need to know any particular rules or information before starting. Organize to have some stones or bricks ready for lining the inside of your fire pit. Then all you need to do is dig the hole. This might take a few hours of hard work with a shovel, but that's all.

DOORS LOWES

Once your hole is deep enough, use the stones or bricks to line the perimeter of the hole, and continue these materials above the ground. You need the stones around the top to form a windbreak and to stop soil falling into the fire. If you want something a little fancier, you can build a stucco pit above the ground. Use magazines and the Internet to help give you lots of great ideas for your fire pit design. Think about your existing home and outdoor furniture, and design your fire pit to complement these existing elements in your backyard. If you're really stuck for ideas or want to create something a little more complicated, it's possible to order plans online that include a list of materials, and it's generally not very expensive.

Now you have a fire pit, safety is always important. Remember, this is a big hole in the ground, and you don't want any accidents. So it might be a good idea to cover the pit when it's not being used. You can just use a piece of scrap metal or wooden board and cut it to fit. You can also choose to buy a basic fire pit, which will generally include the basics such as a cover, log grill and spark screen, and then build a brick or stone wall around that. This will help stop pets or children from running into the fire pit by accident.

For a gas fire pit, you will need to buy either gas fire logs or a simple metal fire ring. Then you simply need to design and build the housing.

Whatever you decided, it's great to do it yourself and have a fire pit that will be the envy of all your neighbors.

Hawaiian Decorating - Make Your Home An Island Retreat

Tropical beaches, clear blue ocean, sunny sand filled beaches, palm trees, these are all things that typically come to mind when someone says Hawaiian. If you would like to create a Hawaiian style in your home, you want to think breezy and open. This would be the typical feel to a home or room in Hawaii.

To begin with, it you're painting the walls, you will want a white or other bright and open color. The earthy tones that you might find elsewhere will not be found here. For Hawaii, we want to think of openness and white walls will help create that feel. If they are painted a color at all, make sure that color is bright without reaching into the neon categories. A soft, bright yellow or green may also create the open feel you're trying to achieve. Doorways and moldings should be a rich brown such as an oak or cherry. These will contrast nicely with the painted walls while keeping the open feeling in the room.

Other accessories may include shells that could have easily come from the beach, light, airy curtains that can sway in a breeze with an open window, and pineapple shaped glasses in the kitchen or other pineapple shaped kitchen appliances or utensils.

This style of home should be furnished with a heavy use of bamboo, wicker, and/or rattan. The use of this type of furniture will encourage the light, airy feel you're trying to achieve. This tropical atmosphere will be completed with the use of this type of furniture. The furniture can be painted white or it can be in its natural state of wood. Either way, this addition will help to complete the Hawaiian look.

Fans and in the ceiling whose blades are shaped like palms are a nice touch when creating the Hawaiian feel. You can find them in stores like Home Depot, Lowes, or any retail hardware store that carries ceiling fans. These fans can be used indoors in a kitchen or dining room as well as outside under a canopy. This type of fan would make a great finishing touch.

Premade ones are installation cut and in most cases designed but are not concluded products yet. The customer can choose to resize them and use which ever color they would like the door to be in. Fully made to order doors compared to premade ones are more expensive. With fully made to order ones, the customer has the full free time of choosing the type of material he wants, the size, the design, etc.

For home installation purposes, premade ones are the ideal choices as they are cost productive and give you the chance of designing your own doors keeping in mind the prevailing trends. Most of us are unaware of what materials would be standard for using as doors therefore by choosing premade ones we can rely on the provider and his knowledge about the product's durability. There is a wide collection these doors cane be found in such as glass, metal, wood and fiberglass. It is best to go for premade ones if you have itsybitsy or no knowledge about the materials.

What You Should Know About Painting covering Steel Doors

Painting surface steel doors is a very manageable home remodeling project for most homeowners. You do not need any extra tools or equipment, just some basic knowledge of how to take paint, how to prepare the surface, and how to indubitably do the bodily painting. None of this is terribly involved or difficult, so you can even make it a chore for a parent and a child to work on together.

When painting surface steel doors, your first notice is paint. Do not just head level to the paint store, because the type of paint you need to use will depend on the type of paint already on the door. You can apply latex paint over the top of existing latex or oil-based paint but you cannot apply oil-based paint over existing latex paint. If you are not sure what kind of paint is currently on the door, then opt for the highest quality 100% acrylic latex paint (gloss, semi-gloss, or flat). Think also about the color you choose, especially if the door is subject to direct sunlight, rain, or wind. curious colors look terrifying at the start but tend to fade more noticeably over time, requiring more frequent repainting.

DOORS

Painting surface Steel Doors

Preparing the surface and doing the bodily painting are next to consider. The surface must be free of dirt, debris, and flaking paint. It should also be wholly rough sanded to ensure the new paint will bond properly. Many population pick to do the surface preparation and painting with the door still installed, but this makes the job much harder.

A great way to do it is to take off the door and take it into a sheltered area such as a garage or covered porch. Lay the door on a pair of sawhorses so it is easier to work on it. The sanding will be easier and the painting will be easier as well. Painting on a flat surface makes it inherent to apply a heavier (more durable) coating of paint without the problem of runs or drips. If you effect these easy guidelines, your project of painting surface steel doors will be both fun and easy.

Cheap Internal Doors to the rescue

In the current economic downturn, internal doors may not be on everyone's must-do list. After all, it is principal to tighten the belt wherever possible, isn't it? Well, economic accident or not, you can still get those internal doors for your home. Cheap internal doors are the answer. This is true no matter if you're planning to use them in your existing home, or whether you are constructing a new home.

Whatever the economic climate, money constrains should not mean that you compromise on the ease and aesthetic standards of your home. You can get internal doors fitted in much lower budgets than you may have thought. Cheap interior doors do not necessarily mean inferior quality - they only mean you get your money's unblemished worth.

DOORS

Let's begin with one unassailable truth - interior doors are mandatory if our homes are to have the kind of convenience and privacy we deserve and cherish. If money is an issue, one should nevertheless think unsuitable options such as bead curtains, since they do not have the principal opaqueness, sound-repulsion and latching mechanisms that real privacy require. Bead curtains are okay for definite high-traffic entry points, such as the kitchen entrance, but that's where their utility ends.

So how are cheap internal doors different? For one, they may not have the solidity and sturdiness of costlier models. However, since internal protection is not as big a issue in most contemporary homes as exterior security, this should not be seen as a drawback. Interior doors made of cost-effective hollowed wood and mounted on non-elaborate door frames are very viable if the funds does not allow for costlier options. Also, there is no real need for high insulation qualities in internal doors as long as the external doors are sufficiently insulated.

Remember, buying cheap internal doors does Not necessarily mean that you are buying inferior goods. It simply means that you are buying smarter, holding in mind your home's dynamics and your actual levels of need. It all depends on how well you plan and shop around. Consult an experienced interior decorator to construct how much money you can save by opting for cheaper interior doors without sacrificing ease and aesthetics.

Blue Poly Tarps And Its Uses During Hurricane Season

As we are approaching June 2007 here in Florida hurricane season now comes in to our thoughts and from what the weather experts are saying we are likely to have a busy season with storms/hurricanes hitting us here in Florida.

In my opinion it is very important that householders stock up with flash lights, water, tins of food, batteries and even a generator if you can afford the expense. However one of the most important items to invest in is a good quality blue tarp this product is very affordable and can be of great benefit during stormy conditions. Tarps can be used for hundreds of things around the home. I would like to mention a few especially during hurricane season.Examples: covering your roof after loosing tiles or shingles from a roof. Vertical Blinds Are a Great Investment

Vertical blinds are an affordable, stylish way to filter or block light, stop drafts and increase privacy. Here's what you need to know about them before you make a purchase.

Vertical blinds are most commonly used as patio door blinds, but they also work very well for wide windows. You can choose from the easier-to-clean vinyl vertical blinds, or have your blinds match your decor perfectly with fabric vertical blinds. Faux wood and perforated blinds are also available. It usually costs around 0 for vertical blinds for a window 66 wide x 84 high or 78 inches wide and 84 inches high. A window 104 inches wide and 100 inches high would be about 0.

DOORS LOWES

You can get custom-made blinds from any Lowe's with same day turnaround. They also offer a special kind of vertical blind -- "S-curve" that makes the blinds look more like drapes than standard vertical blinds do.

Extra Features You Might Want

Self-lubricating wheels help the blinds' tracks move smoothly without you having to get out the WD40.

UV Coating can make the color of your blinds last much longer without fading. If you live at high altitude, where UV light is more intense, or in a southern climate where overall light intensity is strong, having UV coating, especially on blinds that are anything other that white might be worth some extra money.

Wand Control Versus Chain Control

There are two mechanisms, or ways to open and close the blinds and control how much light comes through between the vanes.

Cord and chain controls are standard and wand control is the newer, more advanced option. Cord and chain controls let you have separate controls for vertical movements -- the fabric or cord is used to move the vanes horizontally, or back and forth along the headrail that goes over the top of the window. So you would use the cord to completely pull back the blinds from the window and see through the glass.

The metal chain is used to control the angle of the vanes, so you use the chain to control how much light comes through the blinds with them still drawn together. Cord and chain controls are considered a wee bit more dangerous than wand control because of the cord dangling down near the ground where children and pets sometimes get interested in them and then tangled in them.

For wand control, you twist the wand to control how far apart the vanes of the vertical blind are, and you pull the wand along the headrail to open or close the blinds as you wish.

Motorized Vertical Blinds

Hunter Douglas and other major blind manufacturers make motorized blinds that open and close with a remote control. The motorized option is also available for their "gliding window panels", which are vertical blinds grown large -- a foot wide each, and they can be sized to go floor to ceiling. This can be an excellent choice in a room that would overheat from afternoon sun if the blinds were left open.

Popular Vertical Blind Brands and Retailers

You can get blinds from Lowes, Levolor, Kmart, Hunter Douglas, Smith and Noble, Target, JCPenney, Ace Hardware, Walmart and Overstock.com. Depending on the retailer, the time of year and what kind of sales are going on, you can spend as little as to more than 0 for a patio door window.

Interior Doors

Whether you are building a new home, or simply renovating what you have now, it's important that you get the right interior doors for your home. Too many times people will simply get whatever's cheapest instead of purchasing doors that accent the overall design of the house. Having the best possible interior doors will also raise the value of your home. There are various door styles to choose from including: raised panel, flat panel, French, bifold, mirrored doors, V-Groove doors, pantry & laundry doors, custom glass, Dutch, and café. With all of these styles to choose from, there is no reason to stick with boring, flat doors.

Raised panel doors are an American classic which seek to reproduce different periods of the country's history. Colonial 8 panel doors for example, were popular during the colonial era. The 6 panel doors on the other hand were popular during the 18th and 19th centuries. Try to find the type of door which best suits the design of your home. There are also flat panel door designs which aren't quite as plain as standard flat doors. They feature a simpler look with larger panels. For a particularly fancy look, go for the French interior door style. This style of door can be classified as the following: French doors with wood mullions, French doors with beveled glass, French doors with grooved glass, bifold French doors with clear tempered glass, and bifold French doors with beveled glass.

FRENCH DOORS

Bifold doors are used for pantries, closets, and even folding doors between rooms. The thing that sets bifold doors apart from the others is the fact that they are always in pairs. This can be achieved with 2 doors folding to one side, or with 4 doors split in the center and folding back to each side. Mirrored doors are available as standard and customs sizes and made out of various kinds of wood. One or both sides of a mirrored door will feature a mirror made with safety glass. This style of door is great for your bathrooms and bedrooms.

V-groove doors are made of solid hardwood usually presented in square tile and rail Kinsmen style. Interior doors also are available for laundry and pantry rooms. They offer some fancy designs with frosted glass which allows light into the rooms, but allows only minimum visibility. Dutch doors are another popular form of interior door which are divided into half with a separate door both above and below. These doors are very elegant and feature a variety of uses. It is common for the top door to remain open and the bottom door will sometimes have a shelf. These doors were first invented in the Netherlands in the 17th century. They became popular in the United States and were often used as outside doors. As neighborhoods became less safe they ceased being used outside as often. At this point they are mostly used as interior doors. Hopefully you have gained some better insight on the many different types of interior doors available.

Rototranslating Doors for Disabled population

Rototranslating doors are built especially for places and people with miniature room to manoeuvre such as disabled people and small rooms. They are also useful for places with high hygiene and health issues due to their quality to be cleaned swiftly and frequently such as hospitals and collective places. They are very challenging and come in a wide range of finishes and sizes to cater for distinct tastes.

They are excellent as doors for the disabled as they swing and rotate both ways in the door frame so anyone wheelchair bound would be able to go straight through with ease form whether side of the door. Once straight through the door it is also extremely easy to close development it the ideal exchange for cumbersome acceptable doors. The idea is that rather than have a acceptable door with a circular motion, you use a variable-radius longitudinal arch that is very similar to a cycloid.

DOORS

Due to the dimensions of the rototranslating door, they can be fit into any acceptable door frame and when open will only take up colse to half the space of a accepted door. There is no need for any extra work to be done on the door frames, the rototranslating doors can be fitted directly into acceptable door frames of many sizes. This makes them excellent for small rooms where there is miniature or no room to manoeuvre.

e.g. If a acceptable door when open comes out a total of 1000mm then the rototranslating door will only come out colse to half that, about 500mm. That means you have an extra 500mm space to manoeuvre in the room.

The rototranslating door is also useful for places such as homes for the elderly, schools and for use as hospital doors as they are very easy to clean swiftly and efficiently due to the way they open. This makes it easy to give them an all over hygienic clean to comply with health and hygiene regulations not to mention how much cleaner our wards will be. Hospital doors will be able to be cleaned far best than with acceptable doors as all sides of the rototranslating door can be accessed and cleaned whereas there are safe bet parts of a acceptable doors frame such as the hinge which are extremely difficult to clean.

They also come in handy in everyday houses if you have particularly small rooms in your house and just require an extra bit of room. If you have an extremely small bathroom and find your acceptable door bangs on the sink when occasion it, get a rototranslating door fitted and you will be amazed at how much room you will acquire.

The cost of rototranslating doors is extremely competing when compared to the price of acceptable doors which is to be unbelievable because no extra construction work is required to fit them into acceptable door frames and they can be fitted admittedly and quickly. This keeps the costs down and makes them an ideal competitor to acceptable doors especially where disabled doors and easy clean doors are required.

How to Build a Shed - Step by Step

To make a storage shed you can get started by visiting any home builder type of store such as Home Depot or Lowes. Basically, you build a storage shed in the same way that you'd build a house. Here is an outline the concept so that you'll know what you'd need.

You start with two-by-fours. Now-a-days that doesn't necessarily mean that you use wood. There are plastic extruded 2x4s that are the same size as 2x4s, only they're either made of plastic or another material. However, I would use wood, myself. You should only use pressure treated lumber, particularly for the floor and the bottom plates of the walls.

DOORS LOWES

You'll need lots of wood, lots of nails, hinges, and other kinds of hardware. Here is where you have to make the decision whether you're going to make a permanent platform on-which the shed will mount, or whether it will be built on skids so you can push it to a new location.

And, to connect the two-by-fours together, you use either right-angle brackets, or a T-bracket. These can easily be put together by either drilling a starter hole and then using self-tapping screws, or in other ways. Just ask your local store what is best to use when you're doing such a thing. You'll use the right-angle brackets on any corner which is not three-dimensional, T-brackets wherever you need to attach a 2x4 to another 2x4 at a right-angle, and a three-way bracket if you want to have three two-by-fours join into a three-sided corner.

You lay out the 2x4s on a flat surface so that they're the normal stud width (or wider if you'd like).

If you use a six-foot by four-foot plywood for the sides, then that's convenient and you can easily get them.

As for tools, you'll need a circular saw, a carpenter's square, a screwdriver, a plumb bob line and level, a hammer and measuring tape.

Realize that there might be restrictions in your area as to what you need to do before you begin. It might need to be a specific distance away from the property line, it might be needed that you satisfy certain criteria for your area. Sometimes you need you have your neighbors sign an approval.

If you're going to make a concrete platform, make sure you leave concrete padding around the posts so frost won't be a problem.

You start from the bottom, then build up. The floor rests on two 'members', which are pieces of wood called 'skids'. The joists are going to be a certain distance apart (2 feet). This matches up well with regular 4-foot cladding board. You place as many joists along the wall as you need, then you nail them to the top and bottom 2x4s to make a rectangle of the proper size.

Between them you put the horizontal 'noggings'. These would be perpendicular to the studs.

Next you can put on the wall siding. You'll need help to have the four wall sidings lifted into place, generally. It is particularly important at this point that all walls are straight up-and-down, flush with end of the foundation, and are all right-angles to each other. If you poured concrete, you should have installed a way of bolting the bottom 2x4s to the concrete.

There you have it: you are not ready to build a storage shed.

Materials-
A patio door is available in many materials namely, steel, aluminum, wood & fiberglass. Few of the wooden doors are coated with vinyl or aluminum. Most manufacturers produce French patio doors in two or more types of materials. Different materials have their own pros & cons. Doors made of metals like steel, vinyl & aluminum are less maintenance in the long-term. Vinyl can put up with rain but gets brittle when exposed to UV rays. Wood gives a more traditional look and also gives a high-quality feel. Wooden doors are considered hard maintenance due to leakage problems. Steel doors make a lot of noise; aluminum is less noisy than steel doors. Wooden doors are the quietest among all materials.

Glass panes in the patio door is glazed with different materials such as, tempered, impact-resistant, noise-deafening, tinted, opaque, etc. They are glazed mainly to protect the objects inside the room from sunlight & sometimes to make the glass pane more attractive.

Lights-
The glass pane in a French patio door is called "light." A single undivided glass panel door is called a "single light" door. Divided glass panel doors look more authentic but are prone to leakage & other issues. Divided lights are overcome by simulated lights, which provide a more traditional look along with authentic characteristics. Single or divided light doors depend upon the design of your house.

Custom doors-
All manufacturers are ready to customize to the client's choice. If you are looking for a standard sized door, you can buy it in the market itself. If you are looking for something more specific, you can custom order it from the manufacturer. Custom made French patio doors take longer to be delivered. If you are looking at any unusual material, you will have to custom-make it. If you are looking at a door size of more than 4 feet wide & 8 feet tall, you will have to custom-make it.

Home and Garden on a Budget - Free Shed Building Plans

The economy has barely been letting up lately, so for those of us who are money conscious (and who can afford not to be?) getting free plans for our projects is very helpful. So when the last project, a storage shed, reared it's ugly head, I was left wondering what I could do about free or inexpensive plans to get my project a-moving.

screen doors lowes

Where money is concerned, my advice remains the same. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! You're never going to get the best deal on your plans if you don't put in a bit of time and effort. After looking around a bit, the prices are pretty diverse too; ranging from free storage shed plans to professionally drafted plans costing hundreds... if not THOUSANDS of dollars. They get very costly, and honestly I personally can't justify spending that much on a structure that's sitting out of the way on the edge of my property. I barely even see it!

DOORS LOWES

With that in mind, I began breaking it down. It seems that there are, in fact, a very few well reviewed sets of plans out there, that I could easily afford and not break the bank... and guess what? There are even some free ones out there! Eventually I settled on a blog "Free Shed Building Plans??" to help me locate what I needed.

I gave the free plans a try and they actually proved to be quite good. I ended up doing what the blogger suggested as well and tried out the paid plans. I actually found a set that I liked quite a bit in the package, and committed to that. I called up the local Lowes and had all of the materials delivered over.

Build time was actually shorter than material delivery time, between myself and a few friends. So far I'm very happy with the results.

Stop Your Doors From Creaking

It's wonderful how definite things in a home never get fixed. While I was growing up we had some neighbors that had five kids, and it was wonderful how often I would go over to their house and noticed that their door was creaking in their humble home, not only that, but it was creaking for over five years before anyone fixed it.

In fact, my dad told me to go take over some hinge lube, in a small yellow tube and ask if I could put this on their door for them. Apparently, he had also noticed their creaky door, but my dad was somewhat of a handyman for our own house.

He showed me how to put on the lube, on all the hinges, and made me institution on our front door. Then I went over to the neighbors house, and asked them if it was okay for me to institution on their door as well. They agreed, and in less than three minutes their door never creaked again. They were of procedure very happy with this, indeed excited, and yet, they could have done it at any time in any three diminutive period while their entire lives while they lived on our block. But they didn't, why?

Now after telling you this story, I'd like to ask you a question; why does your door creak at your house? They still sell lubrication tubes for doors at the local hardware store, now there are some dissimilar brands to select from; all of them are under about ten dollars so there is indeed no excuse for you not to stop your creaking doors. This is a home revision task you can do today, and be very proud of yourself, like I was as a kid. Please reconsider all this.

Unique Window Treatment Ideas for Patio Doors

Patio doors are used very frequently by almost all the members of a household. This is usually the reason why homeowners are quite hesitant about applying a window treatment for patio doors. After all, fabrics and other mechanisms might get in the way especially when there are children and pets involved. Here are a few fun and safe ideas for a window treatment for patio doors.

One can go with an Asian style by using a shoji screen. Shoji screens are beautiful rice paper screens that bring a sense and style of the Orient. There are several ways to dress your patio door windows with these screens. The most obvious and the easiest way is to simply place them in the front of the door. However, this could become bothersome if there is a lot of traffic coming in and out of the door. For high traffic patio doors, consider screens that can be mounted right onto the doors. There are shoji screens that can be sold as sliding door mounts. You also have the option of contacting your local handyman to modify a free-standing screen.

Other window treatments for patio doors include curtains, vertical blinds and motorized cellular shades. The least expensive to purchase would probably be the curtains. If you are adept at arts and crafts, you can also sew your own curtains. Tab top versions work best as this slides easily over a rod and allows quick access to opening or closing the patio doors. Lined curtains are also recommended as they help keep the heat and cold out.

Vertical blinds allow small amounts of light into the room as needed. They can also be completely opened. These complement almost any decor as these come in solid colors as well as in numerous patterns. Motorized cellular shades are a pricier option but these come equipped with installation for additional temperature control and are usually operated with a remote control.

Mostly located in the Southwest or Florida, Mission homes are based on the architecture of early Hispanic settlers of California, and so look a lot like the Spanish structures of colonial America. Mission style homes are built with that extra bit of Southwest flavor, and in fact are also occasionally called Southwestern style. Some homes also look as if early missions, which mean another alternate name for this style of homes is Mission Revival. Finally, this style is also known as Adobe homes, as they are typically made with level stucco siding and look made out of that construction technique.

Can Your Purse Hold Your Tool Belt?

Last weekend, I decided to attack our family room hearth with vengeance and a paintbrush. Living with its exposed red brick for the past seven years left me with the itch to give it new life. I figured that, while our house was in demolition zone and covered in drywall dust with the renovation of three bathrooms, a couple of cans of Benjamin Moore and some brushes would not only fit right in with the boxed sinks and faucets in the middle of our front hallway; it would instantly lift both the wall-and my spirits-for spring.

A mere half-hour into it, I wasn't positively sure if I needed to paint the brick and the grout, or just the brick. A quick call to my artist girlfriend confirmed that yes, if one is painting brick, that nasty paint-sucking grout needs to get a couple of coats, too. So as we briefly chatted on the phone about this massive weekend project of mine, she half-joked about the fact that she was standing at her sink scrubbing dried-on concrete from beneath her fingernails. While I was painting my ten foot wall of bricks, she was re-tiling her pool. And our husbands? Mine was at the shooting range; hers was at the golf course.

FRENCH DOORS LOWES

Now, while I admit to enjoying the whole renovation thing and the many shopping trips to hardware stores and design centers that necessarily accompany these projects, I happen to like it when my husband likewise engages in the process. Tackles the hard stuff. Does all of the heavy lifting. I'm happy to plant the flowers if he'll dig the beds. Happy to change the light bulbs if he'll hang the chandelier.

But here I was: six-foot ladder at my toes, paintbrush and primer in hand, ready to reinvent my family room wall. And my girlfriend, who could certainly afford to hire a pool man to unearth loose tiles, was picking concrete off her manicured nails. And both of our husbands were AWOL. What was going on here? Are women taking on more of the tough home renovation projects in this economic recovery? Are we renovating more in lieu of switching out of our homes altogether? Taking more initiative in getting our homes just right? While I understand that two women do not a trend nor sample size make, it left me with one of those "What's wrong with this picture?" pauses. So I decided to look at the numbers.

Indeed, with current market conditions, homeowners are looking for ways to not only add value to their homes, but to get more enjoyment out of them as well. And women are taking the lead. Even before the Great Recession, in a 2005 Home Improvement Research Institute Survey, women initiated 45 percent of all kitchen remodeling projects and 43 percent of all bathroom projects, compared to 34 percent and 36 percent, respectively, for men. (1) In my own case, my husband insisted that our bathroom renovation was not only initiated by me, but that it was being done "to satisfy me"-not him-until he saw the beginning stages (new tile laid, shiny faucets in place, old Broadway lighting removed) all shockingly more magnificent that the twenty-three year-old products with which we had been living since we bought the house seven years ago. His later confession revealed that these down-to-the-studs bathroom renovations were not only true value-add's to our real estate, but that they would bring him immense satisfaction as well when all was said and done.

It seems that women are becoming increasingly comfortable in this role of House CEO, or, as I prefer to call her, "SheEO." There are now even renovation books and renovation magazines written explicitly for the female audience. And tool lines devoted to us, too. The data supports this trend: After married couples, single women are the largest group of home buyers in the U.S. In this year, the number of women-headed households is expected to rise to nearly 31 million, representing about 28% of the U.S. total, according to a 2003 Fannie Mae study. (2) Big box retailers Home Depot, Lowes's and Sears are all jumping on the female home renovator bandwagon. In a 2004 survey conducted by Sears, 83% of 603 female homeowners polled said working with tools makes them feel independent. Apparently, these same women said that they "admire women proficient in home repair."(3)

From my own point of view as a Financial Advisor, I enjoy tackling projects which will yield points in favor of my bottom line over those that do not. I'd rather paint my fireplace hearth than hire someone to do it for me. It was not only emotionally and physically satisfying; it rendered just that much more money in our retirement nest egg for me to enjoy later.

Ditto for the project I took on over Memorial Day weekend, when I antiqued a reproduction country French chest that I bought for our master bathroom. A weekend of sanding, painting, staining and waxing saved me more than two thousand dollars in not having to commission a cabinet maker to build me a custom vanity. And a simple retrofitting of sinks and faucets will give it a look that no one else will be able to replicate.

I believe it is this take-charge desire for mastery, combined with sheer determination and motivation to move towards independence in a variety of areas, that is driving the most impact for this new generation of women. Desiring to understand how things work, particularly in traditional male-dominated bastions like the corporate boardroom and the construction workroom, we women want to play in these same sandboxes and come out ahead.

My mother-in-law gave me only one piece of advice on my wedding day: "From the front door to the back door: that is Carolina's. Everything else, that's Ernie's." Old-fashioned advice as it was, it has served us well in our twenty-eight year marriage. Alas, painting the hearth was clearly in my territory and I grabbed it. The bathroom renovations, too. But that pergola I'm dying to construct on my back deck? It's Ernie's decision. And he doesn't want it. Sadly, he wins. It is Father's Day, after all.

Thinking of Painting Your Own Brick Hearth? Here's How
First make sure that your bricks are positively clean and free of dirt and dust. Take a sturdy, thick-gauged wire brush and whisk over the bricks with as strong a force as you can muster, going from left to right and top to bottom across your hearth. Vacuum all the dirt and dust that has now fallen to your hearth floor so that your work surface is as clean as possible.
Next, take a cloth rag and give those bricks one more hard wipe, freeing any spectacles of stubborn dirt and dust in final preparation for painting.
Standing on a tall, sturdy ladder, with paint in a smaller can or in a rolling tray, apply the paint to your bricks with either a large brush or a roller, whichever tool you feel the most comfortable using.
Paint from left to right, starting at the uppermost left bricks and moving across and down. The bricks will suck up the paint quickly, since it is such a porous material. Move quickly, and re-paint over bricks where you desire a heavier painted look. Paint the grout, too! It will also absorb the paint almost as soon as it is applied. Paint over it until you get the look that you want.
Vary the degree to which you apply paint. Do not paint all the bricks to the same degree, otherwise they will look too "matchy matchy" and you will undoubtedly not get the desired effect. Some bricks should look very worn, the effect you will achieve by applying thinner or fewer coats of paint; others will look less worn, achieved by applying more paint.
Feel free to use a rag to finish up the project, applying second and even third coats of paint unevenly across your hearth until you get the look and feel that you desire.
Use soap and water to clean brushes thoroughly.
Stand back and admire your work. It is a tiring job, and you will feel muscles that you did not know you possessed! But if you did it well, congratulate yourself on a project that yielded money in your bank account from doing the job yourself, as well as the internal satisfaction for adding beauty to your home environment that you will enjoy for years to come.
